Technology in the Classroom
We believe digital resources should enrich learning, promote student achievement, and advance students toward deep, authentic learning. By providing devices for student use, we ensure their digital environment is safe, healthy, and reflective of our modern world. Learn more on our Digital Resource Philosophy page.
Families no longer need to provide a device for their student to use at school (formerly Bring Your Own Device - BYOD) or worry about sharing devices. Using a District Provided Device (DPD) offers many benefits, including:
- Access to classroom digital tools and content on demand
- Appropriate software licensing
- Device compliance for District and State assessments
- Content-filtering software for students in grades K-12 at home and on campus
- Malware detection for security
- Ability to print at school with a District Provided Device
The Student Use of the Internet and Electronic Communications Policy (Policy JS) outlines expectations for student use. Please review the Acceptable Use Policy under Related Links on this page.
Fees
A District Provided Device is provided to each student in grades 3-12 with a $60 annual use fee assigned to each student account in July. Village Middle and Village High School students receive a DPD and are assessed the $60 annual fee.
Fee Exemptions
- Free and Reduced (with release of information)
- McKinney-Vento
- Youth and Foster Care
- Migrant
- Facility
- ASCENT
- GED Prep
Non-Participating Schools/Programs
- The Classical Academy Schools
- New Summit Charter Academy
- Home School Academy Programs
Summer School
No additional fee is charged for summer school students if the fee was paid for the previous school year. If a loaner device is lost or damaged during summer school, a fine of up to $515 will be assessed in Infinite Campus (IC).
Receiving Your Computer, Fees, and Checkout
- Each student will be loaned a device, case, screen protector, and power supply. All assets remain property of Academy District 20.
- The $60 annual fee supports equitable 1:1 device access and covers one-time accidental damage repair.
- Devices will be checked out to students in grades 3-12 within the first week of attendance.
- Fee payment appears immediately in Infinite Campus. Parents/guardians receive confirmation emails. School bookkeepers can view payment info in Infinite Campus.
- Students must not place permanent personalization (stickers, paint, permanent markers, etc.) on district equipment. Devices must be returned in original condition.
- Parents/guardians may choose to keep the device at school, but this is not recommended as students may need it for homework or research.
- DPDs are not permitted to leave the country due to customs regulations.
- Content on all K-12 DPDs is filtered by grade level, even on non-district networks, in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
Device Damage and Repair Policy
- If the annual usage fee is paid and damage is a one-time accident, repairs are covered.
- Additional or negligent damage will result in repair charges to the student’s Infinite Campus account.
- If the usage fee was not paid, full repair costs will be charged.
- Damage should be reported promptly to a teacher or District Technology Technician.
- Removing protective cases or screen protectors voids coverage under the usage fee.
The district has issued protective cases for all 3120 and 3140 devices and screen protectors for all 3140 devices. If a student removes the protective case or screen protector, the $60 usage fee will not cover any resulting damage.
Responsibility and Replacement Costs
All equipment checked out to a student is the student’s responsibility. Families are responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement of devices or components.
Hardware prices fluctuate; however, replacement costs will not exceed:
- Broken screen: $274
- Broken keyboard: $30
- Broken bottom case: $25
- Broken palm rest: $30
- Broken or lost protective case: $30
- Lost power adapter: $30
- Removed screen protector: $6
- Full device replacement: $515
Only certified district technicians are authorized to repair district devices. If a parent or student attempts to repair a device and additional damage occurs, the full replacement cost will be charged to the student’s Infinite Campus account.
Students will be issued a temporary replacement device while repairs are being completed. The replacement device may be a different model.
Lost, Stolen, or Not Returned Devices
- The $60 fee covers one-time accidental damage only and does not cover lost or stolen devices or components. The Replacement fine is $515.
- If you believe your device was stolen, parents must file a police report with the Colorado Springs Police Department and submit a copy to their school's technology department. This may aid recovery but does not waive fines.
- Unreturned items will result in fines charged in Infinite Campus, even if the $60 fee was paid.
Reduced Fees
- Families in the Free and Reduced program must complete an application including a Release of Information form to reduce the DPD fee. These students will be assessed a fee marked as satisfied. See our Free and Reduced page for details.
- One-time accidental damage repairs are covered if the fee is paid; negligent or repeated damage incurs fines.
- Families not qualifying for Free and Reduced but unable to pay may contact the school principal to request a fee reduction.
Statewide Assistive Technology, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) Evaluations
Students qualifying for a device through a SWAAAC evaluation documented in their Individual Education Plan (IEP) pay only one District Provided Device fee. SWAAAC devices do not incur an annual fee. Parents/guardians receive a separate Equipment Release Form detailing replacement costs if damaged.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
- Personal devices may have limited district network access and cannot be used for state and district assessments, per Policy JICJ, Student Use of Electronic Communication Device.
- To use a personal device, complete the online BYOD Request Form. The fee will be waived upon approval. The form must be submitted each school year.
- Students using personal devices cannot print at school.
Taking Devices Home Over the Summer
As part of our summer technology maintenance process, Academy District 20 will collect all district provided devices for a complete inventory and device health check. Before devices are returned, we ask that families please ensure:
- The device is in good working condition.
- All issued equipment is included (charger and protective case for models 3120 and 3140).
- The device and accessories are clean.
- All stickers or decals have been removed.
Students enrolled in online summer school, credit recovery, or completing online AP exams and finals should retain their District Provided Device (DPD) over the summer. School staff will reference enrollment and assessment rosters during collection to ensure these students keep their devices.
Once summer coursework and assessments are complete, devices may be returned to:
Education and Administration Center
